Did you know that by the time you hit 75 years of age, you could have slept for almost 25 years of your life? Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? But sleep is an important part of daily routine. It helps rejuvenate your body and your mind. Helps you think clearer and gets you started fresh on a new day. Which is why it is all the more important to pay attention to how and where you sleep.

The human body’s basic support structure is the skeletal system. The single column that supports and connects all bones in the upper half to the ones in the lower half designates how well we stand, move and sit. Yes, the spinal column. During the major part of the day, when we are most active, even while sitting, the spinal column is always under stress. When we go to bed, unless you have a mattress or bedding that properly supports your weight, you can unknowingly cause stress to your spinal column. This can lead to stiff backs, necks or even cause more severe orthopedic problems.

Apart from the thickness of the mattress, the material used in making the mattress, the length and breadth and the conditions in which the mattress is going to be used, play a big role in the longevity of the mattress and the comfort it provides. There are many kinds of mattresses available in the market, ranging from orthopedic ones to dual comfort ones. In terms of size, a crib size is mostly the smallest measuring 27 inches by 52 inches. At the other end of the spectrum, you get the king size mattress measuring 76 inches by 80 inches. A step higher would be the variant which is 72”x84”.

If you are anywhere as tall as 180 centimeters, the king size variant is the one that you should go for. Feet dangling off the edge of a mattress is not a fun way to enjoy a good night’s sleep. If you are looking for a new mattress or want to replace your existing one, here are some points to keep in mind when trying out a new mattress –

Comfort

With memory foam mattresses, try to sleep on all sides and check if the foam pushes back. The ideal mattress should just support the body and spine, not sink under your weight neither feel like a plate of rock.

Support

The base of the mattress needs to be firm, to prevent any unnatural curving of the spine during at least a 10-15 minute nap.

Temperature neutrality

Some foam mattresses do not come with large air pockets. This can cause people to feel hot overnight because of less air circulation. Check with the store or the salesperson about this.

Durability

There are latex, air, foam and coil mattresses. Based on your use and the way they are made, some will last longer than others. Better check with a salesperson who can advise you about the right one to buy

Lastly, customer reviews for a mattress are for reference purposes mostly. You don’t know the body type, weight or sleep pattern of the person who left a review. There might be a stark difference in all aspects of you and an earlier customer. First-hand experience and expert opinion is the best way to go.
